From there I edit the footage into the storyline and then drop an individual color grade on top unifying the scenes into the final cut. Especially if youve been using LM for awhile, EC can look especially wrong on. The LM lut heavily prefers ETTR, while EC is best suited to a moderate exposure (middle gray at 40IRE), to avoid placing key scene elements in the rolloff. However, and with that said, my use of Nikon's LUTs are almost always turned down to 35-55 percent -as perceived colors in Japan vs Arizona are not even close! LOL. A big thing with those coming from Leeming is that footage exposed for it will not be ideally exposed for EC. Don't skip this step! I used to hand grade and in looking back and regrading older footage, even using the Nikon LUT at 10% and then adding your touch looks better than NOT using the Nikon LUT. I edit in PPcc, and use the current Nikon LUT appropriate to each camera for an initial grade. Be sure to use the False Colors view and nail middle gray at 35 IRE. Here's what I have found works : my workflow now is 2x Z6ii's and one Z6 -which is used as a C-cam. Hope the following may help, as prolific Nikon video shooters are scarce. In any event, Ive found methods that basically work (Davinci Resolves DJI D-Gamut/D-Log color space for M3C video and a Leeming LUT for M2P video, both coupled with use of DRs wheels and curves). I have also made a lot of mistakes switching over to the Z line +/- 2 years in now, so I know Nikon video can be tough. Not directly analogous to your work but I shoot a lot of location corporate videos. ![]()
